Dawn to Dusk
Our concert series begins with Haydn’s enchanting Symphony No. 6, Le Matin, a vivid depiction of the awakening world, and concludes with Mozart’s magnificent Prague Symphony, a hallmark of late classicism. Joining us are two outstanding flautists: Wendy Clarke, Associate Principal Flute of the MSO, and PCM’s own Marney Pope. The program also features a captivating neo-baroque suite composed by PCM double bassist Benjamin Bates. Italian Echoes
Our program opens with Schubert’s vibrant exploration of the Italian style and concludes with Stravinsky’s masterpiece Pulcinella, inspired by the music of Italian composer Pergolesi. Providing a striking contrast, we are joined by the exceptional Melbourne pianist Caroline Almonte for Shostakovich’s dynamic First Piano Concerto. The program also features When Thunder Speaks Softly by Robert McIntyre, winner of the prestigious Dorian Le Gallienne Composition Award, promising a truly compelling and diverse musical experience. Fire & Ice
With the lyrical warmth of Dvořák’s Serenade for Wind Instruments and the striking intensity of Melbourne composer Katy Abbott’s Glacial Thunder, we bring contrasting temperaments to life. Our student program highlights Elgar’s serene Elegy, while the series concludes in grand style with Peninsula-born rising star Louise Turnbull, returning to PCM to perform Beethoven’s iconic Violin Concerto.
